Weekend Preview

Three new movies hit theaters this weekend.  Dunkirk looks like the sure thing with its stellar reviews and Oscar-buzz, look for it to easily take top spot.  The other two newcomers (Girls Trip and Valerian) will have their hands full trying to knock Apes and Spidey off the podium.

1. Dunkirk $47 million – love the buzz, love the reviews, love the short run time, certainly looks like we have a hit on our hands.

2. Apes $25.5 million – even with the crowded marketplace, last week’s number one should have enough muscle to finish in the second spot this week.

3. Spiderman: Homecoming $23.5 million – by the slimmest of margins over our number four movie.

4. Girls Trip $23 million – excellent reviews, an ambitious R-rating, it’s trying to out-bad the moms from last summer.

5. Valerian $20 million – if there is an odd movie out this is it.  But a $20 million opening is still solid.

6. Despicable Me 3 $12 million – continuing it’s fall, I was very close to having this be the number one movie this summer, not the fourth place finish it looks destined for.

7. Baby Driver $5.5 million – it just keeps cruising along.

8. The Big Sick $5 million

9. Wonder Woman $4.5 million – she’s just amazing

10. Wish Upon $2 million
