June Preview

by The Commish on Thursday, May 31, 2018

This June is basically the same as 2015.  Dinosaur movie – check; Pixar movie– check; female-led movie – check.  Much like 2015, we only see three movies making over $100 million at the domestic box office.

1. Incredibles 2 – we’re giving the nod to Incredibles over the dinosaurs because of upside? What are we crazy? There is so much buzz, excitement, and more importantly void of decent animated fare, this is going to be a monster hit.  Look for an excellent opening and a final tally in the $450 range.

2. Jurassic World 2 – the dinosaurs are off the island and being sold to the highest bidder, my guess is that a lot of rich people get exactly what they deserve.  I expect we see a pretty significant sophomore slump for JW2 and a final tally around $375 million.

3. Ocean’s 8 – I like this premise a lot and it looks super.  $135 million for sure, with a decent shot at more.

This is where we drop from the top three to a bunch of movies that might break out.  Unlike 2015, there is no sequel that should do well but bombs, instead we get a bunch of original ideas, sort of.

4. Tag – the ensemble comedy looks really good and should have a couple of weeks of comedy clearance to garner a decent audience, be happy with $55 million.

5. Uncle Drew – we’ll be needing to see a huge push during the NBA playoffs for this to see any significant returns, I’m not expecting much, look for a total of $50 million.

6. The Hustle – frankly we haven’t seen a thing and this worries me, a lot.  I wouldn’t be surprised if this got pulled from the schedule altogether.  The revisioning of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a great idea and the actresses attached are superb, I’m just shocked we haven’t seen anything, images, clips, anything, which leads me to believe, something isn’t right.  If it gets released, expect this to finish in 4th for the month, but I’m not holding my breath.

7. Hereditary – the buzz has been amazing, this could be big, but I’m just not sure.  Look for a total of $40 million.

8. Hotel Artemis – visions of Baby Driver do pass through my head like sugarplums, but I’m siding on the err of caution, look for a final number of $36 million.

9. Superfly – this is a bona fide X-factor movie.  I would love to put it at number 4 on this list and predict $80 million, but that’s my fight between my head and my heart.  I sure hope it makes $80 million, but I’m betting its more like $32 million.

10. Sicario 2 – so a sequel to Sicario, just with the CIA, I love it, but I’m not sure audiences will.  Look for a final of $30 million.
