January Preview

by The Commish on Friday, January 5, 2018

For the last two years January has seen a $100 million movie.  This year, we don’t think so.  With so many holdovers from the holiday season and horrible weather, look for the top January movie to make less than $75 million in 2018.

1. Maze Runner 3 – the franchise has been in a downturn, the movie was delayed, there will be lots of competition in early February.  Even though we are still picking it to win January, it will be a very lackluster January.  $65 million

2. Paddington 2 – it made more than Thor 3 in the UK, man they love their bears!  Look for a total of $60 million.

3. Proud Mary – maybe it’s the fact that it’s a genre that has been dominated by men, maybe it’s because it comes out on MLK weekend, but whatever the reason, I believe that Taraji P. Henson has a hit on her hands with Mary.  $55 million

4. 12 Strong – can Thor open a movie that isn’t Thor?  It didn’t happen with Moby Dick and we doubt it will happen here.  Look for a disappointing $45 million total.

5. Insidious 4 – the haunted key, the lost key, the piano key, it doesn’t matter, it will open to $20ish million and maybe double that.  $40 million

6. The Commuter – it definitely feels more like Run by Night than Taken 4.  $30 million

7. Den of Thieves – I hope I’m way off on this one.  I hope that it opens to $30 million and makes $75!  I just don’t see that happening.  $25 million.

8. Forever My Girl – it’s been a while since we had a Christian country music movie.  I for one, welcome its return.  $20 million
