2018 Rankings

by The Commish on Wednesday, December 6, 2017

Every month we rank the top 75 movies by season.  The box office year is a moving target, so make sure to read this column every month to find out how your movies rank, and what movies you should be targeting on the waiver wire.

Winter/Spring
1. (1) Black Panther – leaving it at number one for the Spring, with an upside for top 5 for the year.
2. (3) Ready Player One – it’s really close with it and Wrinkle, this is not a guarantee.
3. (2) A Wrinkle in Time – someone in your draft will reach for this movie, so if you want it, be prepared to spend.
4. (4) New Mutants – nothing changes here, be confident in the new X-Men movies.
5. (5) Peter Rabbit
6. (6) Rampage – could appeal to a wide-range of audiences.
7. (7) 50 Shades Freed – the bloom is off the rose, not a guarantee to make $100 million.
8. (8) Tomb Raider
9. (9) Pacific Rim 2
10. (10) Red Sparrow
11. (11) Cloverfield 3 – I’d like to see some more images.
12. (14) Paddington 2
13. (13) Maze Runner 3 – less convinced it will make $75 million.
14. (15) Blockers – should be raunchy and super fun, but will it perform more like Fist Fight?
15. (12) 15:37 to Paris
16. (19) Sherlock Gnomes – the trailers have been everywhere.
17. (17) Annihilation – love the premise, hopefully it lives up to expectations.
18. (-) Proud Mary – this has a real chance at making a splash.
19. (-) Upside – Kevin Hart alert, has the potential to be a huge hit.
20. (-) 12 Strong – will build with a very specific audience.
21. (20) Acrimony – Tyler Perry, should be good enough for a late round pick
22. (16) Insidious 4 – the date scares me; not sure it’s making $40 million.
23. (23) Game Night – where we found it last month.
24. (24) Winchester
25. (21) Paul, Apostle
Dropping out: Alpha; Action Point; Den of Thieves

Summer
1. (1) Avengers 3 – the release of the trailer has only solidified its top spot.
2. (2) Jurassic World – very excited for the trailer this week.
3. (3) Solo – could easily win the summer.
4. (4) Incredibles 2 – hotly anticipated movie for next year
5. (5) Deadpool 2
6. (6) Ant Man 2 – interesting to see how much he’s used in Avengers 3.
7. (7) Mission Impossible 6
8. (8) Ocean’s 8 – looking pretty at number 8.
9. (9) Hotel Transylvania 3 – trailer is out, not much competition in July, should do nicely.
10. (10) Mamma Mia 2
11. (12) Skyscraper – numbers 11-15 could be changed on a daily basis.
12. (11) Alita
13. (13) Predator
14. (14) Equalizer 2
15. (15) Christopher Robin – the box office between this and Skyscraper is a wash.
16. (-) The Nun – the Conjuring universe is hot, don’t forget about this one.
17. (16) Teen Titans – live action teen titans, should be good for a laugh.
18. (22) Uncle Drew – could very well be the breakout comedy of the summer.
19. (17) The Spy Who Dumped Me
20. (21) Purge 4
21. (20) A Star is Born
22. (19) Nasty Women
23. (25) The Meg – shark movies have been averaging $50 million the last couple of summers, this one betters that.
24. (24) Tag
25. (18) Barbie – draft with caution, not sure it will be ready.
Dropping Out: Happytime Murders

Fall
1. (1) Wreck it Ralph – rumors of popular princesses, have this at the top of my list for the Fall.
2. (2) Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2
3. (3) Aquaman – could better Justice League’s numbers.
4. (5) X-Men: Dark Phoenix
5. (4) Mary Poppins Returns
6. (6) Venom
7. (8) Bumblebee – I’m really confused about this release.
8. (7) Grinch – full length animated movie, while the classic is shown every year on TV, risky.
9. (10) Smallfoot – trailer looks great
10. (9) Nutcracker – should be a hit
11. (13) Mortal Engines
12. (14) Night School – Kevin Hart alert.
13. (18) First Man – might build ala Martian or Gravity.
14. (17) Creed 2 – should preform
15. (15) Robin Hood
16. (11) Animated Spider-Man
17. (12) Holmes & Watson
18. (19) Girl in the Spider Web
19. (21) Goosebumps 2
20. (16) House with Clocks on the Wall
21. (20) Overlord
22. (24) The Women of Marwen
23. (22) Jungle Book Origins
24. (23) Widows
25. (-) Bohemian Rhapsody
