2017 Rankings - June

by The Commish on Monday, June 5, 2017

Every month we rank the top 75 movies by season.  The box office year is a moving target, so make sure to read this column every month to find out how your movies rank, and what movies you should be targeting on the waiver wire.

Summer
1. (1) Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – still sticking with it to end the season at the top of the pile, but it’s going to be closer than I originally thought.
2. (2) Despicable Me 3 – no reason to move it to number 1 yet, but I’m betting it explodes.
3. (3) Spider-Man: Homecoming – this could be the dark horse winner for the summer.
4. (4) Wonder Woman – great start, should make a realistic play for $300 million, excellent pick for teams in January.
5. (5) Transformers 5 – while we still have it at 5, I’m not even sure it cracks $200 million.
6. (6) Cars 3 – I’m just not sure people will come back, with the excellent Illumination product available a couple weeks later and CU starting strong, this could falter.
7. (10) Dunkirk – still don’t like that no stars are attached, but the new a nation coming to help its soldiers is pretty great, wouldn’t be surprised if it finished in the top 5.
8. (8) War of the Planet of the Apes – let’s keep it here for now
9. (7) Pirates of the Caribbean 5 – thus ends the story of Captain Jack.
10. (9) The Mummy – no previews are not a good thing… I’m officially concerned.
11. (11) Emoji Movie: Express Yourself – not so sure anymore, but something must lead the late summer box office.
12. (13) The Dark Tower – and it’s one of these two.
13. (15) Captain Underpants – nice opening, now can it do 4X opener?
14. (19) The House – still looks funny and should have three relatively open weeks.
15. (16) Rough Night – back to back funny movies in the charts.
16. (14) Alien: Covenant – so about that guaranteed $100 million…
